From Knightian uncertainty to realâstructuredness: Further opening the judgment black box
Research Summary: Entrepreneurial judgment remains a concept that resembles a black box. This article attempts to further open that black box by developing a dimensionalization
of types of judgment. To achieve this, it joins recent efforts to
explicitly link entrepreneurship to Simonian themes by integrating the notion of decision problem structures into the
judgment-based approach (JBA) to entrepreneurship. This article proposes a more comprehensive and nuanced approach to
judgment in the face of decision problems we label ârealstructured.â Extending the JBA comes with several important
implications: It uncovers additional entrepreneurial knowledge
problems, provides new insights for both economic organization and judgment communicability, and informs research on
entrepreneurial success and failure. It also sheds new light on
the controversy over the relationship between effectuation
and judgment.
Managerial Summary: When taking decisions, entrepreneurs
cannot know how the future will pan out. Those decisions are
made under conditions of uncertainty and only time will tell
whether they prove astute or otherwise. The uncertainty of
the future leads entrepreneurs to exercise judgment based on
their individual beliefs and to act accordingly. The components
of that entrepreneurial judgment remain rather underexplored. The purpose of this article is to dig deeper into, and thereby
improve, the understanding of entrepreneurial judgment.
The main result of this article is a four-part dimensionalization
of judgment, covering entrepreneurial (sub-)judgments on
the effects incurred by action, the appraisal of action alternatives, the goals underlying action, and resolving the decision
problem
On predictive entrepreneurial action in uncertain, ill-structured conditions
Decision-making is at the heart of entrepreneurship. Unsurprisingly, entrepreneurship research has engaged with processes of entrepreneurial decision-making resulting, most importantly, in the notions of causation, effectuation, and enactment. Nevertheless, the range of processes delineated to date remains somewhat incomplete. Drawing on crucial insights from the analysis of decision problem structures reveals that entrepreneurship theory has lacked a process that both recognizes the ill-structuredness typically surrounding entrepreneurial decisions and places prognoses center stage. While effectuation implicitly addresses structural defects but denies prognoses a central role, causation emphasizes the importance of predictions while being associated with well-structured, risky environments, and thus, unaffected by structural defects. Theorizing about a combination thereof, that is, a process recognizing and considering the ill-structuredness of entrepreneurial environments yet building on predictions of the future is overdue. This paper, therefore, seeks to foster a more comprehensive yet nuanced understanding of entrepreneurial decision-making processes by outlining the intrinsic features of one such process that we term execution and relating it to existing processes
Modeling and control design of a contact-based, electrostatically actuated rotating sphere
The performance of micromirrors in terms of their maximum deflection is often limited due to mechanical constraints in the design. To increase the range of achievable deflection angles, we present a novel concept in which a free-lying sphere with a flat side as reflector can be rotated. Due to the large forces needed to move the sphere, multiple electrostatic actuators are used to cooperatively rotate the sphere in iterative steps by impacts and friction. A parameterized system-level model of the configuration is derived, which considers arbitrary multi-contact scenarios and can be used for simulation, analysis, and control design purposes. Due to the complex, indirect relation between the actuator voltages and the sphere motion, model-based numerical optimization is applied to obtain suitable system inputs. This results in rotation sequences, which can be understood as a sequence of motion primitives, thus transforming the continuous time model into an abstract discrete time model. Based on this, we propose a feedback control strategy for trajectory following, considering model uncertainties by a learning scheme. High precision is achieved by an extension controlling the angular change of each rotation step. The suitability of the overall approach is demonstrated in simulation for maximum angles of 40°, achieving angular velocities of approximately 10°/s
Stochastic Model Predictive Control with a Safety Guarantee for Automated Driving
Automated vehicles require efficient and safe planning to maneuver in
uncertain environments. Largely this uncertainty is caused by other traffic
participants, e.g., surrounding vehicles. Future motion of surrounding vehicles
is often difficult to predict. Whereas robust control approaches achieve safe,
yet conservative motion planning for automated vehicles, Stochastic Model
Predictive Control (SMPC) provides efficient planning in the presence of
uncertainty. Probabilistic constraints are applied to ensure that the maximal
risk remains below a predefined level. However, safety cannot be ensured as
probabilistic constraints may be violated, which is not acceptable for
automated vehicles. Here, we propose an efficient trajectory planning framework
with safety guarantees for automated vehicles. SMPC is applied to obtain
efficient vehicle trajectories for a finite horizon. Based on the first
optimized SMPC input, a guaranteed safe backup trajectory is planned, using
reachable sets. The SMPC input is only applied to the vehicle if a safe backup
solution can be found. If no new safe backup solution can be found, the
previously calculated, still valid safe backup solution is applied instead of
the SMPC solution. Recursive feasibility of the safe SMPC algorithm is proved.
Highway simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed method regarding
performance and safety
Design and optimal control of a multistable, cooperative microactuator
In order to satisfy the demand for the high functionality of future microdevices, research on new concepts for multistable microactuators with enlarged working ranges becomes increasingly important. A challenge for the design of such actuators lies in overcoming the mechanical connections of the moved object, which limit its deflection angle or traveling distance. Although numerous approaches have already been proposed to solve this issue, only a few have considered multiple asymptotically stable resting positions. In order to fill this gap, we present a microactuator that allows large vertical displacements of a freely moving permanent magnet on a millimeter-scale. Multiple stable equilibria are generated at predefined positions by superimposing permanent magnetic fields, thus removing the need for constant energy input. In order to achieve fast object movements with low solenoid currents, we apply a combination of piezoelectric and electromagnetic actuation, which work as cooperative manipulators. Optimal trajectory planning and flatness-based control ensure time- and energy-efficient motion while being able to compensate for disturbances. We demonstrate the advantage of the proposed actuator in terms of its expandability and show the effectiveness of the controller with regard to the initial state uncertainty

The relationship between job-anxiety and trait-anxiety: A differential diagnostic investigation with the Job-Anxiety-Scale and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory
Job-related anxiety, in contrast to general trait-anxiety, is by its very nature associated with problems of participation at work. The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between general trait-anxiety and specific job-related anxiety and to examine whether job-anxiety and trait-anxiety are differently associated with sick leave. 190 inpatients of a psychosomatic and orthopedic rehabilitation center with mental and somatic disorders filled in the Job-Anxiety-Scale (JAS) and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI-T). Additionally, information on age, gender, the current duration of sick leave in weeks, employment status, duration of unemployment, and position at the workplace were collected.
Highest scores of job-anxiety were found for the JAS-dimensions âjob-related worriesâ and âhealth anxietiesâ, followed by âcognitions of insufficiency,â âstimulus-related anxieties,â and âsocial anxieties.â JAS and STAI-T were significantly correlated. Job-anxiety, in contrast to trait-anxiety, was significantly related to duration of sick leave. Women showed higher scores on the STAI-T but not on the JAS.
It can be concluded that job-anxiety is related to but not identical with trait-anxiety. Job-anxiety is important to understand sick leave and appears as a multidimensional and clinically important phenomenon
